Our Aims:

  • Maximise patients’ independence in daily activities to enable them to safely return to living at home
  • Empower patients with new strategies to do their everyday activities such as washing, dressing and cooking
  • Promote healthy memory strategies and support patients with cognitive difficulties with adaptive strategies
  • Consider the patient’s home environment and how it can be modified to support the patient to live as independently as possible

Occupational Therapy Service

We have a bright & spacious occupational therapy department on the ground floor.  The department space includes a kitchen where patients can practice their domestic tasks.

The department also includes a stair lift and car transfer pod where patients can practice using new equipment they may consider for use at home.  There is also a domestic style bathroom where patients can trial modified bathroom equipment.

All in-patients admitted to Clontarf Rehabilitation Hospital undergo a comprehensive occupational therapy assessment to identify their functional abilities, occupational needs, and rehabilitation goals.  Each patient is provided with an individualised, goal-directed and evidence-based occupational therapy intervention programme, tailored to support participation in meaningful daily activities and maximise independence and quality of life.

Therapy Sessions

Our one-to-one OT sessions take place on the wards or in occupational therapy department on the ground floor.
We also offer group rehabilitation sessions including:

  • Cognitive Rehabilitation
  • Upper limb rehabilitation (interdisciplinary group with Physiotherapy)
  • Well-being and Relaxation (interdisciplinary group with Medical Social Work)
  • Monthly Memory café (full multidisciplinary involvement that includes family members and community service representatives also)

We can refer onto our external specialist services; including primary care services, our regional memory & technology library, Headway and our neighbours in the IWA Ability Programme and Driving assessment Service.

Education

The Occupational Therapy Department provides undergraduate clinical placements for occupational therapy students from Trinity College Dublin (TCD).  We also facilitate other students requests where feasible.
