Our Nutrition and Dietetic team deliver evidence-based nutritional assessment and individualised dietary care plans to optimise healing, enhance recovery, and help patients regain strength and functional outcomes.

Our Nutrition and Dietetics team

Services Provided:

  • Malnutrition screening (MUST) for all patient admissions, with dietetic referral pathways for patients identified at risk.
  • The department provides nutrition assessment, diagnosis, dietary treatment, and education plans for patients with chronic diseases. Prioritisation of referrals is based on clinical complexity, nutritional risk, and disease-specific needs.
  • Nutritional support for active rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and orthopaedic patients.
  • Collaboration with the Catering Department to oversee the nutritional composition of all hospital menus and provide standard, therapeutic, and texture-modified diets tailored to individual clinical needs.
  • Liaising with acute hospital services at admission and discharge to ensure continuity of nutritional care, with appropriate hospital and community referral pathways arranged as required.

Our Aims:

  • Provide comprehensive, evidence-based nutrition assessment, diagnosis, and individualised dietary care for patients with complex nutritional needs or at risk of malnutrition.
  • Support recovery, rehabilitation, function, and independence through optimising nutritional status.
  • Empower patients, to achieve their rehabilitation goals through tailored nutrition care and education.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care across rehabilitation pathways.

Education

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has provided undergraduate and master clinical placements for students from Technological University Dublin (TUD), Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and University College Dublin (UCD). In addition, we support Catering placements of dietetic Masters students from UCD.

Medical

Our medical department – comprising Consultants and Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs), provide evidence-based, person-centred medical care for each stage of rehabilitation. Our Medical Consultants are responsible for the overall treatment and coordination of each patient’s rehabilitation care.

Nursing

Our Nursing team provides round-the-clock care and support through every stage of rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy

Our Physiotherapists work with patients affected by injury, illness or disability to restore movement, promote independence and rebuild strength through exercise.

Occupational Therapy

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs) work with patients to rebuild confidence and independence in their everyday activities, supporting patients to go home safely and to return to previous roles including work.

Medical Social Work

Medical Social Workers support patients and families during rehabilitation by addressing the social, emotional and practical challenges that may arise.

Pharmacy

Our Pharmacists advise clinical staff, patients and their carers on all things medication, ensuring everything is safe, effective, and clearly understood.

Speech & Language Therapy

Our Speech & Language Therapists support patients living with communication, speech, voice, eating and/or swallowing difficulties

X-Ray

Our X-ray Department offers a general imaging service for all inpatients, and a GP outpatient service for adults, by appointment only.
