Welcome to our Hospital’s Sustainability Page. We are dedicated to enhancing our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives across all healthcare operations. Driving this mission forward is our Environmental, Social Governance Committee (AKA Green Committee), a collaborative body of staff dedicated to implementing impactful green policies and cultural changes across our hospital.

Our ongoing efforts focus on tracking annual energy usage and establishing strong emission reductions.

Waste & Circular Economy

Since 2024, our hospital has saved roughly 40 tonnes of waste—the equivalent weight of approximately 3 double-decker buses!

The 2GoCup Initiative

By eliminating single-use cups and introducing the 2GoCup scheme, we are successfully saving approximately 6,000 cups per month.

Cup Savings
The avoidance of single use cups is approximately 82,300 cups.
Stacked up, the cups would reach a height of 526 meters—higher than the Taipei 101 Building (508m)🏢in Taiwan!
This is the same hight as vertically stacking 263 hospital beds🛏️ in to the air!

Phase 1 Segregation Bins

We have introduced recycling stations in our canteen, featuring specialised compartments: Sluice (liquids only), Dry Mixed Recyclables, Compostable Waste, Re-turn Bin, and General Waste.

Food Waste & Waste Centralisation

In 2026, we are baselining all food waste to target specific reductions. Over the next 2 years, we will review innovations in patient meal serving systems designed to dramatically reduce food waste at mealtimes while maintaining precise patient nutrition.
Furthermore, our Waste Centralisation Programme has reduced the number of separate administration bins from 20 bins down to 4 central recycling stations. This optimization reduces portering staff collection time, increases recycling rates, reduces the number of bin liners required, and encourages our staff to stay active during the workday.

Furniture Repurposing

Water Conservation

Water Stewardship Scheme

Our organization has proudly joined the official Water Stewardship Scheme with Uisce Éireann. A full water audit will be completed shortly to map out consumption patterns and point out immediate saving opportunities. Furthermore, a long-term water submetering project is to be designated for rollout over the coming years to monitor high-demand sections accurately.

Biodiversity & Well-being

We are actively assessing all available hospital green space for potential rewilding and investigating terms to join the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.

In addition, architectural designs are being finalised for an innovative Green Outdoor Physiotherapy Gym. This space will combine physical rehabilitation equipment with dedicated natural seating zones, encouraging patients and staff to spend healing time outdoors to boost holistic well-being.

Sustainable Transport

While the hospital operates no active vehicle fleet, we focus heavily on the commuting footprint of our healthcare workforce using the Avoid → Shift → Improve structural transport hierarchy.

Cycle to Work & TaxSaver Upgrades

We have enhanced the terms of our TaxSaver Scheme and Cycle to Work Scheme to enable broader staff enrolment and participation, reducing single-occupancy vehicle trips.

For individuals who must drive due to roster times or distance requirements, we deliver tailored eco-driving education. This reduces personal fuel expenditures while reducing greenhouse gases, particulate matter, NOx, and SO₂ emissions to shield local air quality.

Shift and Save Initiative

Our recent “Shift and Save” staff awareness event distributed high-visibility gear to support active commuters and provided on-site advice regarding our active travel schemes.
